In a landmark decision, The Honbl. Supreme Court of India passed a verdict on conducting NEET from 2016 which included a decision to scrap all Private colleges' entrance tests. This decision will greatly reduce the corruption and horsetrading of medical seats in Indian pvt. colleges.
There was a lot of confusion created amongst the candidates and teachers regarding the entrance test. However NEET Phase 1 was successfully conducted on May 1st, in the place of AIPMT which was scheduled on May 1st. Candidates who applied for AIPMT sat for the NEET phase 1 examination.
Many other entrance examinations which had scheduled their examination are either cancelled or postponed due to the judgement passed by the Apex court. The SC had mandated that no private colleges or universities can conduct separate entrance examination for admissions to MBBS or BDS courses. The SC passed an order on May 6th related to cancellation of other medical and dental entrance exam. It is clearly mentioned in the verdict that no examination except NEET will be permitted for admission to MBBS or BDS studies.
After this verdict of SC, admission to medical and dental seats offered at government and private colleges will be done through AIPMT/NEET 2016 score. Phase 1 of NEET was conducted on May 1st and phase 2 will be at a later yet undecided date in 2016.
After the order, all private medical and dental colleges have been forced into cancellation of their entrance exams.
Private colleges in India have 25,535 MBBS seats and 9,521 PG seats. Most of which are known to be sold to the highest bidder.
Horse-Trading of medical seats in private medical colleges in India is one of the worst kept secrets in the country. This decision by the Supreme Court is a Huge step in eradicating corruption in the medical field in India.
Without corruption, India can go on to produce world class doctors and worthy candidates will get admissions instead of the candidates willing to spend the most amount of money.
PrepLadder team commends this decision by Justice Dave and hope to see it implemented in the correct way in NEET-2.
