Many candidates miss the opportunity to crack JEE Mains by just a mere margin. And this happens most oftenly. What to do then, be disheartented, no you don’t have to be disheartened, in fact there are several options to pursue Engineering in many prestigious engineering colleges other than the IITs.

Common questions that rise when you failed by few marks.

What are the Possible alternatives in good institutes that I can get?

If you couldn’t secure 100 marks in JEE Mains then, don’t lose heart. You can still get a seat in any one of the 32 NITs, 18 GFTIs or 18 IIITs, based on your AIR. The rank list will be prepared by normalizing the scores of JEE Mains and markds of class XII in the ratio of 60:40 respectively. Thus, wait for your 12th board result which can change your fate and strengthen your rank in the merit list.


What if I don’t get a seat in any one of the participating institutes of JEE Main viz. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs?

Even if you don’t get a seat in any of the participating institutes off JEE MAINS, then too, you have endless options than dropping a year. Various reputed private universities and institutes too provide admission to the candidates based on private entrance tests conducted by them. Some of private institutes with their entrance examination are like BITS Pilani conducts BITSAT, VIT University conducts VITEEE and Manipal University conducts MU OET respectively. These are in the top chain of private colleges. You can go for the admission in these colleges too.


What if I only want to study in Government institute?

If you are not impressed with the options discussed above and you your heart still beats for Government College. You still have many state level engineering colleges that conduct entrance examinations from which you can benefit from and fulfil you dream. Some of the top state government college entrance examinations which offer you alternative option to pursue B.Tech are UPSEE, Karnataka CET, COMEDK UGET, KEAM, etc. These colleges offer you a great opportunity if you miss JEE MAINS.


If I don’t perform well even in state level entrance tests?

Even if you don’t perform well in any of the entrance examination, life does not end here. Under this situation you are left with two options.

  1. Drop an year: Drop an year only if you are certain that you will clear JEE Mains in the next attempt by hard work.
  2. Compromise and Join a Private college: If you think that you cannot clear the entrance examination in the next attempt then you must not waste time. Join a private institute and pursue engineering.


What if I only want to study in IIT?

Well, If it is your passion to study in IIT and you are ready to do anything for it, then drop an year, study smart and hard during this one year and write the exam in next attempt. You will definitely clear the exam if you are determined to study in IIT.

But if studying in IIT is an unrealistic dream and your are not putting optimum effort then it is better to give up the idea and compromise.


There are numerous number of things that you can do if you could not clear the cut off of JEE Mains. Options are available, but everything is in your hand to choose the most suitable option.
