569 new seats added in IITs | Total seats now 10,575

With the Centre giving its nod to the establishment of 6 new IITs and with 4 of them participating in JEE Advanced 2016, the total number of seats at the most prestigious engineering institutions have gone up by 569 for 2016 Admissions.

This has been certainly a good news for all engineering aspirants who seek admission to the Nation’s Top- ranked Institutions.

The seat intake of these premier engineering institutes has gone up to a total of 10,575 from the existing 10,006 seats.

IIT Karnataka, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu and IIT Chhattisgarh are the new IITs which are participating in 2016 Admissions.

According to the official data, a total of 23 IITs including ISM Dhanbad will offer admissions to Undergraduate courses from the session 2016-2017. With the addition of the new IITs, seat intake has gone up by 569. 420 seats out of 569 will be offered by 4 new IITs while the remaining seats will be filled by some of the existing IITs who have added few seats in their UG program.

 Change in Seat Intake at different IITs

11 IITs have made changes in their seat intake. 7 IITs have increased their seat intake for B.tech Aspirants whereas 4 IITs have lowered their seat intake for B.Tech aspirants.

As evident from the table, IIT Indore, IIT Ropar, IIT Mandi, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Pallakad have increased the UG seats.

In contrast, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur and ISM Dhanbad have lowered UG seats.

Overall , the total seat intake of the IITs for 2016 year is 10,575 in comparison to the 2015 seat intake of 10,006

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will regulate counselling and seat allotment for admission to 23 IITs for the session 2016-2017.

JoSAA is the authority responsible for conducting admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs


However is this really good news? Among reports that Students are losing interest in IITs.

Shouldn't the government focus on increasing the standard of existing IITs instead of increasing seats and new colleges?
