The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD) is contemplating to launch 32 Direct-to- Home (DTH) channels.
Consequently, students from across the country will soon be accessible to live telecast of lectures from top-notch institutions including six IITs and others while being seated in their living rooms.
The Department of Space has given its nod to allot two transponders on a GSAT series satellite for the successful implementation of Ministry’s ambitious project.
MoUs has been signed with many institutions which will provide useful lessons and content to be broadcast on these channels.

A senior official from the Ministry stated that the Government is focusing on using space technology to broaden the reach of high-quality education.
The official further stated that the aim of launching the 32 DTH channels is to ensure that live classroom lectures will be transmitted from ten teaching institutions out of which six will be IITs located in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Guwahati.
Official sources stated that the Ministry is under the process of finalizing the names of a dozen other premier institutions’ lectures of which would be telecasted on TV.
Sources further stated that the Ministry is making efforts to ensure that the channels go on air in a couple of months.

An official stated that the DTH channels will be freely available on Doordarshan’s FreeDish DTH platform and the only pre-requisite for receiving them is a Set Top Box.
At a meeting last month, a high-level committee presided over by Director, IIT Gandhinagar,worked out on the finer details for making the project operational. Official sources stated that the committee has made the recommendation that the channels be operationalised by August 2016.
