Seat vacancies in IITs increase by 100%

After the final round of JoSAA 2016 counselling and seat allotment, it has been reported that as many as 100 undergraduate engineering seats have remained vacant across the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology).

Reportedly, the number of vacant seats have doubled this year in comparison to the number of vacancies last year.

Nonetheless, official data states that IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi have admitted two candidates each beyond their total intake this year.

Vacancy Doubles at IITs

As per the official data, the number of vacant seats across the IITs have been 100 in 2016 in comparison to 50 vacant seats in 2015. This implies that there has been an increase of 100 percent in the total number of seats remaining unfilled.

Nonetheless, the total intake of IITs has also increased this year with the addition of 4 new IITs.

IITs have added 420 more seats for the session 2016-17 with the commencement of admissions at the 4 new IITs. Even then, the number of vacant seats has substantially increased this year.

IIT-BHU and ISM-Dhanbad worst affected

As per the official data, out of the total seat capacity of 10,572 across all 22 IITs and ISM Dhanbad, only 10,476 seats have been filled. Out of the 100 vacant seats, ISM Dhanbad has 23 vacant seats while 77 seats have remained vacant across all 22 IITs.

The major contributors to the 100 vacant seats are IIT BHU where 38 seats have remained vacant followed by ISM Dhanbad where 23 seats have remained vacant.

Analysis of the official data for the admission year 2016-17 suggests that IIT BHU and ISM Dhanbad have contributed 61 vacant seats to the total count.

Following these is IIT Kharagpur with 7 vacancies followed by IIT Jammu and IIT Palakkad with 5 vacancies each.
