IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi witnesses rise in admissions from Top 500 ranks 

As per the official data of IIT Admissions 2016, candidates are most likely to choose a seat in IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi in case they get a rank below 500.

Among the Top 500 Rankers, there has been an increase of over 40 percent candidates opting for admissions at IIT Delhi while IIT Bombay has witnessed an increase of over 60 percent candidates in comparison to last year.

As per the official data of IIT Admissions, 231 candidates opted for IIT Bombay as their first preference while 151 selected IIT Delhi as their first preference out of the top 500 in the academic session 2016-17.

This is in sharp contrast to the academic session 2015-16 wherein 142 candidates had chosen IIT Bombay and 110 candidates had opted for IIT Delhi out of the Top 500 Rankers.

This also implies that in the academic session 2016-17, out of the Top 500 Rankers, over 30 percent opted for IIT Delhi while over 42 percent opted for IIT Bombay as their preferred institute.

The most preferred IITs among the Top 500 Rankers were IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras after IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.

On the other hand, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT BHU, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Guwahati were the institutes lower in the preference order among the Top 500 Rankers.

Nonetheless, IIT Kanpur which had been the most sought after institute after IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi last year, has witnessed a substantial fall in terms of candidates opting for admissions in this session.

The number of candidates taking admission in 2015-16 were 74 in comparison to 56 in the session 2016-17.

This implies that there has been a fall of 25 percent in the admission rate in this session at IIT Kanpur.

Likewise admission year 2015-16, IIT Bombay has emerged as the most sought after institute among the IIT aspirants.

As per the official data, for the admission session 2016-17, amongst the Top100 Rankers, 67 opted for IIT Bombay, 28 preferred IIT Delhi while 5 opted for IIT Madras. This implies that the share of Top 100 Rankers opting for a seat at IIT Bombay has grown in this session.
