Are you planning to pursue engineering in the near future? If yes, there is some excellent news in store for you! As per the official reports, Indian Institutes of Technology may escalate their seats and admit up to one lakh students by the year 2020.
The current strength of the IITs across Graduate, Post-Graduate and Doctoral Courses is 72,000.
The proposal to increase the total intake of the IITs will be considered by the IIT Council in a meeting on 23rd August.
The acceptance of the proposal will add on 30,000 overall seats to the IITs.
The plan is to increase the total intake of the IITs by 10,000 each year successively over the next three years such that the total intake of the IITs touches one lakh by the year 2020.

In an interaction with the media, a senior IIT official stated that the total intake of the IITs across the Graduate, Post-Graduate and Doctoral courses is 72,000 and it is binding on the students to stay in the hostels. He further added that a proposal is under consideration to admit students not availing the hostel facility.
He further added that the increase in the total intake will not impact the quality of education imparted at the IITs.
The MHRD is also planning to discuss Project Vishwajeet that is aimed at improving the Global Academic Rankings of the IITs .
The MHRD is also planning to make IITs the Top-League globally during the discussion.
Project Vishwajeet will bring forth the parameters on which IITs are lagging behind and take appropriate action to address the loopholes.
