IITs lower cut-off marks to make room for more students

In an attempt to do away with the issue of large number of seats lying vacant across the IITs, the nation’s Top-Notch Institutes have eventually decided to lower the cutoff marks for the most sought after exam with a view to make room for as many students as they could including the day scholars. IITs have reduced their cutoff to 75 for the General (Unreserved) Category and 38 for the Reserved Category.

Over the past few years, there has been a persistent fall in the number of students making it to the IITs owing to its strenuous entrance exam papers in addition to negative marking thereby leaving several seats vacant across the Institutes which is a sheer waste of Institutional resources.

An IIT Director stated that the Teaching-learning process at the IITs is very powerful and intense and students getting into IITs with low ranks in JEE emerge as gems by the time they pass out the B. Tech programme.

Highlights of the New Changes

  • The unanticipated changes post the last IIT Council meeting serve as a breather for millions of Engineering aspirants who dream to get into one of the IITs.

  • In the last IIT Council meeting, the Council has reached the decision to admit more candidates by increasing the total intake to 1,00,000 from the existing 70,000.

  • Out of the 1,47,678 candidates, 36,566got through the JEE Advanced in 2016.

  • Aspirants appearing in JEE Advanced 2017 might get into one of the IITs if the candidate secures merely 75 marks out of 372 for the General Category and 38 for the Physically Challenged Category.

Nonetheless, the lowering of the cutoffs has raised the alarm fearing it could deteriorate the academic quality of the Top-Notch Institutes.

18 B. Tech students had been ousted from IIT Roorkee owing to poor academic performances and 72 had been debarred for poor academic record in 2015. Nonetheless, the students were re-admitted.

A former Director of the Premier Institute stated that appropriate education at the initial stage and enhancing the education standard of schools is vital to ensure that students secure good marks in the IIT Entrance Examinations.
