With the news of introducing 4 new IIT’s, the number of seats in IIT’s will also rise. These four new IIT’s include IIT Chhattisgarh, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu and IIT Karnataka. Admission to these IIT’s will be offered through the same procedure via JEE Advanced. Now the number of IIT’s will become 23 with the Addition of these four institiutes.

IIT Jammu, Chhattisgarh and Goa were announced in 2014 by the HRD Ministry, while IIT Karnataka was announced in the following year. However only two out of the six IIT’s as announced in 2014-15 became functional in 2015 due to administrative reasons.

With the increase in the number of IIT’s, the total number of IIT engineering seats will also go up from 10,006 seats. However, the number of seats in these 4 new IIT’s is not known yet.

These IITs will be mentored by the older IIT’s to help them in smooth functioning. IIT Jammu will be mentored by IIT Delhi , IIT Goa by IIT Bombay, while IIT Chhattisgarh by IIT Hyderabad. According to the earlier announcements by HRD Ministry, the new IITs will operate rented campuses, untill they have their own campus buildings functional.

IIT Kharagpur is the oldest one among all the IITs which was set up in 1951. Then IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras came into existence in 1959. In 2008, 6 IITs new IITs were started by the then government including IIT Bhubaneshwar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Patna and IIT Ropar.
