About NDA 

National Defence Academy and Naval Academy are the two distinguished academies that train the aspirants for the entry into the prestigious defence sectors of the country at officer ranks. In virtue of serving in the Defence, a gateway examination is conducted by UPSC. National Defence Academy examination is conducted twice in a year for the admission in different program for National Defence Academy NDA and Naval Academy courses by the Union Public service Commission which is exclusively responsible for issuing guidelines for selection and the conduct of the NDA entrance examination. The examinations are conducted in the month of April and September. The examination conducted in April is termed as NDA & NA (I) and the examination conducted in September is referred as NDA & NA (II). NDA exam is conducted as a national level written examination.


This exam is conducted in two stages viz. Written Exam in stage 1 and SSB interview in stage 2. Only the qualifying students of stage 1 are eligible for SSB Interview. NDA 1 2016 is scheduled to be held on 17 April 2016.  Application period for the NDA 1 2016 has been concluded. Aspirants who have applied for NDA will be issued the e-admit card from the last week of March 2016 onwards.


The examination is conducted for around 375 seats at one time. Details of the seats are given below.

  • 208 seats in Army
  • 42 seats in Navy
  • 70 seats in Air Force
  • 55 seats in Naval Academy

Eligibility criteria

The one applying for NDA I 2016 must fulfil the below mentioned eligibility norms.


Only Indian Citizens can apply for NDA 1 provided that they present a domicile certificate as a proof.

However, foreign nationals are also allowed but the clarification for that can be found in the respective embassies of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan and Myanmar.

  • AGE:

Candidates must be aged between 17 to 20 years of age as on 31st December 2015.

  • Educational Qualification:
  1. The candidates must have studied physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the higher secondary examination.
  2. There is no bar on the minimum percentage qualification
  • The students appearing for the exam this year are also eligible.

NDA 1 Written Exam Pattern 2016

The NDA Exam is conducted in two sections viz. the Mathematics and the General Ability sections. The details of these two sections are as follows:

  • Mathematics section has 120 questions carrying 300 marks and general ability section has 150 questions carrying 600 marks.
  • The total marks for the examination is 900.
  • 150 minutes are allotted to each of the two sections.
  • There is provision of negative marking for every negative response.


  • The UPSC has been entrusted with the task of conducting only the written examination. Only the successful candidates are then called for an interview at the SSB Centers allotted by the Service Selection Board. The interview lasts for five days in which the abilities in both field and vocal are checked of the candidate. The candidates are screened and made to perform group tasks.

NDA Admit Card 2016

UPSC will be releasing the NDA (I) Admit Card 2016 3 weeks before the examination. The candidates can download the same by visiting the official website of UPSC for that matter.

Candidate can download their Admit Cards from the UPSC website by entering their application ID number and Date of Birth.


Qualifying candidates will be called for SSB.


SSB Selection Stages

There are two stages in SSB – part 1 and part 2. Candidates who pass the part 1 examination will be permitted for part 2.

  • Stage 1–

Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests, Description Test (PP&DT), Picture Perception. Candidates will be shortlisted on the combined performance in OIR, PP and DT.

  • Stage 2–

Interview, Psychology Tests, Group Testing Officer Tasks and Conference

The successful candidates are then sent for a medical screening. The final merit list of the candidates is made keeping in mind the score of candidates in the written examination, SSB Interview and Medical screening.
