About NDA 1 2016

NDA 1 examination was held nationwide for the direct officer rank entry in different programs of National Defence Academy NDA (viz. Army, Air Force and Navy) and Naval Academy. More than 3 lakh candidates took the NDA 1 Examination. UPSC NDA examination is conducted twice in the year (April and September). Selection of the candidates is done on the basis of written examination and SSB interview. Candidates who clear the written examination are only then eligible for the SSB.


No cutoff marks are published for written examination. Only the final cutoff list is prepared on the basis of aggregate marks of written exam plus SSB interview Marks. Roll nos. of qualified candidates for Admission to the Wings of National Defence Academy and Naval Academy are published by UPSC. Selection process is solely conducted by the ministry of Defence.

General Ability Test




Paper Analysis 2016 (April 17th)

First phase of the NDA 1 Examination was conducted in two written papers.

1st paper Mathematics based carrying 300 marks.

2nd paper General Ability Test (GAT) carrying 600 marks

Both the examination papers were multiple choice question type. Paper was in both English and Hindi.

Mathematics paper consisted of 120 questions carrying 300 marks asked from XI and XII class syllabus.

GAT paper consisted of 150 questions carrying 600 marks. This paper had three sections viz. English, Science and General Knowledge.

In Science section:

Most of the questions were asked from Physics (more conceptual), Biology (absolutely factual) and Chemistry (quite direct).

General Knowledge section:

Questions from History, Indian Polity and Geography were asked in this section. Most of the questions were from Modern Indian History.

English section:

Questions were asked from the reading comprehension, grammar, etc.


Question paper was difficult than the previous year’s examination.

Maths question paper’s difficulty level was from moderate to difficult level. If the candidates have attempted atleast 65% answers correctly in this section then it is more than sufficient. 

The candidates who qualify in the written examination will be called for the SSB Interview which is the next level of the NDA exam.
